How to Remove Date Hierarchy in Power BI

When using Power BI for data analysis and visualization, default date hierarchies in reports can sometimes create complexities.

Date hierarchies in Power BI can be incredibly useful for organizing and analyzing time-based data effectively. They provide a convenient way to drill down and aggregate data at different levels of granularity, such as year, quarter, month, or day. Date hierarchies also enable dynamic time-based filtering and intuitive exploration of temporal trends in your reports.

However, there are instances where the default date hierarchies may not align with your specific reporting needs. In this blog post, you will learn how to remove date hierarchies from your visuals.

What is a Date Hierarchy in Power BI?

Date hierarchy In Power BI gives you the ability to organize dates in a structured manner. This feature allows you to drill down from a higher-level period, like a year, to more detailed levels such as quarters, months, or days. By utilizing date hierarchies, you gain a comprehensive perspective of your data and unlock the potential for advanced analyses.

When working with Power BI’s default date hierarchy, you will find several predefined levels, including Year, Quarter, Month, and Day. These pre-established levels provide a solid foundation for your analysis. However, you also have the flexibility to create custom date hierarchies by adding extra levels such as Week, Day of the week, Fiscal year, Fiscal quarter, and Fiscal month, or rearranging the existing ones to suit your specific needs.

When you work with a date column in Power BI and drag it into the field pane of a visual, Power BI automatically recognizes the date data and organizes it into a hierarchy.

You can then use either one of these icons to drill down to the next level or expand the drill down to the next level.

When you use the first icon to drill down to the next level, the visual will show data for the next level in the hierarchy. In the previous image, the visual displays data for the highest level, the year; hence, the reason there was only a dot on the visual.

In the date hierarchy, what follows next is the Quarter. Therefore, when you use the first icon, the “Go to the next level in the hierarchy” icon, the visual displays the next level in the hierarchy – Quarter.

When you utilize the second icon for drilling down in Power BI, it incorporates data related to both the previously selected hierarchy and the currently selected hierarchy in the visual. In this image, the visual displays an expanded version of the year and quarter levels of the date.

But the data has information about two quarters, so to get it all in one visual, you may have to drill down once more.

How to Remove the Date Hierarchy

Sometimes, you may not want to use date hierarchy in your visual. But it’s a default action in Power BI as date hierarchies are created once a date column is dragged into a field.

To remove date hierarchies, however, simply follow these steps.

  1. Right-click on the date field.
  2. Click on the date column name, which in this case is Oder Date.

Once you remove hierarchies, the plot all date levels at a go. Also, you will not get the drill-down options in the visual anymore.

Conclusions

While date hierarchies are valuable for organizing time-based data, knowing how and when to remove them can make your life easier. By optimizing your visualizations, you can present precise insights and improve your Power BI proficiency, ultimately empowering effective data-driven decision-making.
